Brief History:
Verona was known as Matson until 1883 when the
Postal Dept. changed the name to Verona, because there was another Matson
in Dakota Territory. J.J. Stephens put up the first buildings, a
dwelling and a store, in Verona about 1883. The store building is
gone, but the swelling is still here, owned and occupied by Greg Eull.
The first school was built in 1904 and the Catholic Church in 1908.
There were 3 newspapers in year's past. Verona once had doctors,
a drug store, banks and a top population of 250.
Points of Interest:
We have an excellent school, grades K - 12, ITV and vocational school
in Oakes each day. There is rural water, a city sewer system, street
maintainer in town, an active fire department, two churches and a city
park. Verona is located on two state highways, Hwy #1 and Hwy #13.
We encourage families to look into moving to Verona for a quality education
and the advantages of a small and caring community. There is housing
available and more is in the planning stages.
