Brief History:

 The town of Grand Rapids began when Captain Homer T. Elliot filed the first land owner paper in LaMoure County in March of 1880, and was the first building between Jamestown and Huron, Dakota Territory.  He then built an overnight stage coach stop for the Jamestown and Columbia Stage Line.  Later when the railroad reached Ellendale another stage line rose with Grand Rapids as an overnight stop between Ellendale and Jamestown.  The stage stop was a short distance south of Grand Rapids.   Grand Rapids was the first organized town in the county, being organized in June 17, 1880 and was designated the county seat on October 27, 1881.  The county seat was later moved to LaMoure in 1886. The first Grand Rapids school was established in 1910.  After the school districts were reorganized in 1963 Grand Rapids was incorporated into LaMoure.  Since this took place Grand Rapids slowly became the small town it is today.
